Level 12: 1500/3000 w/ 75a
I tried to get tricky with AA here. The raiser in this hand had been rather tight & I didn't want my hand to be so well defined, so I just coldcall PF. When an A falls on the flop I figure it will be hard to get any action on the hand unless he's holding the other A. We chk/chk twice & finally I try to bet the river, but he's not interested.

After this hand I'm up to 57k & I'm moved to a new table. My new table is pretty tight, so I'm able to take advantage of that & get up to 92500 without a showdown.
Level 13: 2000/4000 w/ 100a
I'm 2nd in chips at my table until the chipleader gets moved early in the level. That makes me the chipleader & 2nd to me is half my stack. I'm able to bully the table a bit more now. I also win w/ AQ against a shortstack's push with JJ.
I end the level at 164k & we're down to 3 tables.
Level 14: 3000/6000 w/ 100a
Not much happens here. A lot of shortstack all-ins.
I end the level at 167k.
Level 15: 4000/8000 w/ 200a
We're down to 2 tables now. I'm no longer the CL at the table, as bigger stacks have been moved here.
I lose a hand when I call a shorty push with AK, he has AQ. QQ on the flop, that brings me down to 120k.
The very next hand I get JJ on the button & call a 20k EP raise from the tourney chipleader. The BB, who had been very tight goes all-in for 77k total & the CL calls. I figure that between the two of them, someone has AA-QQ & I get out of the way. Turns out BB had JJ also & CL had KQs. Q on the flop & I dodge a bullet, but I'm now down to 99k.
I'm able to steal once more & end the level at 110k. We're down to 14 players now.
Level 16: 6000/12000 w/ 200a
I push from the BB w/ AJo against a button raise, button folds. Up to 147k.
I make an iffy call with QJs in the BB against a button's shortstack push. Button had gone from 200k to 50k over the last few hands & I think he was a bit on tilt. I was getting 1.75:1 on the call & figured his range was very wide. . . maybe even any 2. I call & he shows T8s. . . neither of us hit the board & I win. That puts me at 202k.
I make another call, getting 2:1 with KTo in the BB against shortstack's push from the CO. He shows A4s & holds. That brings me to 170k.
I get one more steal in & end the level at 189k.
Level 17: 8000/16000 w/ 400a
We play a couple of hands this level & then we join up for the Final Table.

Hi Neil ... question on the first hand of your post where you smooth-called with your Aces. I know you wanted to hide the strength of your hand but did you consider that you may have lost your market by not making your move before the flop. Consider this: the raiser by your description was rather tight yet he opened for a raise from under the gun. You pretty much ruled out in your post-flop analysis that he didn't have the case Ace. But what would his range of hands be as a tight player from up front - I give him Aces,Kings,Queens,Jacks,Tens,Ace-King and maybe Ace-Queen. If he holds a premium pair and you just called the preflop raise, he's not going to be too thrilled that an Ace fell on the flop and he may very well shut down (which he did). But I think this would have been a good spot to reraise with a decent chance that his holding is good enough where he will either call, netting you more money, or play back at you and maybe you can get it all-in where he is a substantial dog. What do you think?
Hi John,
I think in hindsight I prolly should of reraised. A smooth call might have been better if the raise came from LP. An UTG raise here from this player was a pretty strong hand.
His range at this point in the tourney would be a bit wider than what you mentioned though. There's too much to gain by raising PF once the antes kick in & the blinds are this high. When I say he was rather tight I don't mean crazy tight. I know my range there would be 77+, AJo+, KQo+. That doesn't mean he had the same range, but I'd be surprised if he's folding AJ or 99 there with so much in the middle. After seeing the hand play out, I'd guess that he had 88-JJ or KQ. I think QQ-KK makes a crying call there on the river (that's what I was hoping to induce by checking behind twice).
It's funny that you mention this hand. . . I thought the same things you said as I was going though my hand history.
